History of American River
American River, situated on the banks of Eastern Cove on Kangaroo Island, was first visited by Europeans in 1802 when Captain Matthew Flinders sailed around the Island. A year later, a group of American sealers arrived on the brig, Union, and camped for four months whilst they built the Independence from local timber. The town takes its name from this time which is somewhat of an untruth. American River is not a river at all but instead a protected inlet. The narrow tidal channel that separates Pelican Lagoon from Eastern Cove forms Kangaroo Island's most protected harbour.
Things to do in American River
Walking Tracks
The Independence Trail - beginning at Remembrance Reserve this easy walk follows the coastline to Independence Point. Allow 2hrs return
The Fish Cannery Walk - follow Scenic Road until the end, continue past the old farming machinery. Walk follows the blue posts. Allow 1.5 hrs return.
Both trails meander through the natural coastal scrub where birdlife can be spotted in the trees or on the water. Quiet walkers may spot echidna, wallabies or goannas.
Pennington Bay
Located a short 15min drive from the hotel, spectaular Pennington Bay is a photographers dream. It is a superb surf beach and a popular place for fishing and swimming. Whilst there are protected rock pools for safe swimming, care must be taken. In rough weather the southerly winds blow at gale force, causing huge waves that can be heard at American River. Pennington Bay is located off Hogs Bay Road. A 2km dirt road will take you to the beach.
Prospect Hill
The climb to the top of Prospect Hill is not for the faint-hearted! The 512 steps reward climbers with panoramic views of the south coast, including American River, the Southern Ocean and Pennington Bay as well as the peaceful waters of the Pelican Lagoon Aquatic Reserve. On a clear day you can even see Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills. First climbed by Captain Matthew Flinders, the top of the hill was used by the famous explorer to survey the Island.
Bird Watching
American River is a paradise for bird-watchers. Many species of birds can be found among the diverse range of habitats in this area including Black Swans, Australian Pelicans, Cape Barren geese and migratory birds. One of the most prized sightings is the very rare Glossy Black Cockatoo. The Kangaroo Island Lodge is fortunate to have Sheok trees right next to reception which is a favourite of the Glossy Black Cockatoos. Best time for spotting these endangered birds is at dusk.
